3 main ascending sensory pathways

dorsal column medial lemniscus pathway conscious proprioception, vibration

fast fibres abeta fibres mylenated

fasiculus grasilis T6 and down (medial to cuneatus)

fasiculus cuneatus T6 and up (lateral to gracilis)

both travel up ipsilaterally until they reach the medulla and then inside the medulla they synapse respectively at nucleus gracilis and nucleus cuneatus at this point the first order neuron is now a secondary neuron at this point the tract decussates this forms the medial lemniscus (this is the name of the white matter tract) it then goes to the thalamus where it synapses with 3rd order neurons which synapse in the corona radiata then to the primary somatosensory cortex where the information is then passed and processed

Paleospinothalamic pathway

dull, aching, diffuse, and chronic pain (remember this pathway is the old (pale) one so it is not as snazzy as Neospinothalamic it difficult to pinpoint pain from this pathway it mostly covers a larger area and is not overly specific it also contains C-type fibres and so is slow
