Dr Sarah Mills
explain and explore the differences betwen the two types of models talked about in this lecture
The Social Model of disability aims to look at wider problems than the evidence based medical care itself, the Medical model aims to look at medical based solutions to everything such as if someone is deaf and wants to join mainstream school it would look at what surgical implementions can they bring in, what hearing aids? how can they FIX the issue? in this situation the social model would look at how do we accomidate for them? how can we change the situation to allow them to fit in? such as implementing BSL teaching courses for teachers and students at the school, bring in speech to text devices, etc etc.

a patient with the same condition same personality same age same symptoms as another may not be able to cope as well as them due to their social grounds. they may not have enough money to buy things that would support them such as a person who is able to afford a mobility scooter has a much better sense of mobility than someone who has only a wheelchair that they can push only so far themselves. or someone who has a lot of famillial support will be better off than someone who strugles to do daily tasks and so is worn out to do anything else. also people may struggle to get themselves medical attention such as when they move house they may now have to wait up to 18 months to see a medical professional compared with where they were they were before they were seeing one each 3 months
doctors rarely play the main role in supporting patients with disabilities, often there are organisations and charities that support conditions and they have a nurse or other type of professional that will be a patients first line of contact and they will go to them with any concerns they have, also there are times where patients can have more knowledge on a specific condition than you as a junior doctor could ever have, they have lived with it for sometimes their whole life, you have only studied medicine for the last 6 or in my case (8months or so hehe)
