what is a drug monograph?
commonly perscribed drug list (v useful in critical care)
Dilutions and strengths of solutions w/v = g/mL unless otherwise specified w/v% = g/100 mLs 50% w/v = 50g in 100 mLs 1:1000 = 1g in 1000mls = 1000mg in 1000mls = 1mg/ml
You are helping with the care of a 70kg patient in cardiogenic shock. You are asked to begin an infusion of dobutamine at 2.5 micrograms/kg/minute. Dobutamine is available in a 12.5 mg/mL, with a volume of 20 mLs in the ampoule. The drug monograph recommends the whole ampoule of dobutamine is diluted before use to a total volume of 250mL in 5% dextrose solution. You are asked to set the pump to deliver the required prescription in mLs/hr.

total volume is 250 mls = whats in
20 x 12.5mgs = total amount = 250mgs = what you got!
2.5 micrograms/kg/min
2.5 x 70 = 175 micrograms
175 micrograms / min - we gotta get this per hour so x 60
= 10500 micrograms per hour
10500 micrograms into miligrams = 10.5 (100microg in a milig)
