The kidneys are located between T12 and L3 vertebrae, although they can move slightly during inspiration (down) and expiration (up). The right hand side kidney is 1cm approx more inferior than the left hand side kidney due to the liver being such a large organ that is pressing down on the kidney.

Function of kidney (functional unit = nephron)

= Filtration - absorption - excretion
