what is Tranexamic acid (TXA)
A type of drug that helps the blood clot
. It prevents the breakdown of a protein called fibrin, which is the main protein in a blood clot
1/3rd of patients with a TBI have abnormal lab findings showing abnormal coagulation
this causes an increased risk of intracranial haemorrhage and higher mortality. trials show that when TXA is given within the first 3hrs of a TBI it reduces death
Primary TBI is a brain injury caused at the point of impact can be anything from concussion to a haemorrhage
Secondary TBI is a brain injury that caused by the after effects eg if they are not properly managed of the primary TBI
