must be carried out by two doctors

they must work together not seperately

Both doctors must have been registered with the GMC (or equivalent) and have 5yrs experience post registration

one doctor must be a consultant

both doctors must be trained in a specialty appropriate to the task

they must have no part in a transplantation team and have no involvement in the retrieval from patients after their death

3 preconditions must be met

1- patient must be deeply comatosed and on a mechanical ventilator

2 - no doubt that the brain damage is irreversible or treatable

3 - the ensurance that no other causes are keeping the patient comatosed eg sedative drugs
