The spinal cord’s anterior horn contains motor neurons which project alpha fibres to control musculature. the body has different ‘needs’ for this in different locations for example in the Lumbar (L) and cervical (C) regions the anterior horn is larger whereas in the thoracic (T) area it is relatively smaller due to the need for it. the L and C regions supply the Upper and lower limb musculature whereas the T region only controls axial musculature so the ‘need’ is less so.
the arrangement of the spinal cord is laid out in a particular way in other aspects too
Flexor and Extensor gray matter and gray matter connected to distil and medial musculature is arranged in different compartments
Distil musculature grey matter = lateral aspect of the anterior horn
Medial musculature grey matter = medial aspect of the anterior horn
Flexor Grey matter = more posterior
Extensor = more anterior
