Live - these vaccine types are made up of living organisms, this is the most dangerous type and is rarely used now, extremely virulent organisms are never used for this
attenuated - also sometimes known as ‘live-attenuated’ vaccines, these use live organisms that have been grown on non-human cell lines and have been slightly modified/attenuated to be less virulent and not able to replicate as easily
^^^ good to note that live and attenuated vaccines are whole organism type vaccines and so allow the body to be subject to the FULL organism, this is great as the organism is able to gain immunity from all different parts of the organism. these vaccines tend to be labeled the best kind, because of this fact but also because they are the most dangerous type of vaccine..because of the fact they are the mmost realistic to what the real organism will/would be like within the patient. so they evoke the best immune response to prepare the induvidual should the situation arrise where they get the pathogen themselves! ^^^
Killed - the organism is killed before injection which means it is not able to replicate/cause/evoke disease however it will still produce/allow for a string immune response
Extract - this type of vaccine is used when an organism cannot be safely killed for use in vaccine e.g. you dont know if it will be unabke to replicate although it may appear to be. so for this vaccine they use materials derived from disrupted or lysed organism, eg capsular polysaccharides.
Recombinant - genetically engineered to alter critical genes. Often can infect and replicate but does not induce associated disease
DNA - naked DNA injected. Host cells pick up DNA and express pathogen proteins that stimulate immune response.
